Mans Best Friend: Canine Heroes
Life-Saving Dogs and Their Incredible Roles
Dogs aren’t just pets—they’re partners, heroes, and lifesavers. From detecting diseases to performing mountain rescues, supporting wildlife conservation and even aid in wartime missions., certain extraordinary dogs go above and beyond. In this article, we highlight 4 incredible Border Collies: John D., Rob, Helios, and Zammy, exploring their remarkable work and the impact they’ve made on humans, animals, and the environment.
Rob the Parachuting Collie – Hero Dog of World War II

ROB THE PARA-DOG
Receives the PDSA Dickin Medal for Gallantry
Border Collies were used extensively in WW1 and WW2. Their intelligence and speed allowed them to deliver messages between front lines and headquarters, sometimes through dangerous terrain and under fire. They also helped locate wounded soldiers on the battlefield, acting as mercy dogs, carrying first-aid supplies to the injured. One of the most famous wartime Collies was Rob who made 20 parachute jumps during the second world war and is credited with frequently saving his human colleagues.
Rob was strapped into a special harness and calmly followed infantry troops into North Africa and Nazi held Italy with the SAS. One of his jobs was to stand guard and alert his human colleagues of danger by licking their faces.
He was the only dog to be ever awarded the PDSA Dickin medal for gallantry, considered the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross – as well as a lifetime of biscuits. Please don’t mention parachuting to our dogs! And certainly not the biscuits.
Helios – Romania’s Avalanche Rescue Hero
Helios, a Border Collie, became Romania’s first avalanche-rescue dog. He joined the Argeș Salvamont team and completed over 26 mountain rescue missions. Helios located people trapped in snow and extreme terrain. His agility, intelligence, and stamina show why Border Collies excel in avalanche and mountain rescue. During training, he tackled daring challenges, including paragliding simulations for real-life scenarios.
Helios’s bravery and dedication earned national admiration. A documentary, Against Time, celebrates his extraordinary work. The film shows Helios in action during life-saving missions. It highlights his intelligence, agility, and close bond with his handler. Viewers witness thrilling rescues and the partnership between man and dog, showcasing the courage and skill of heroic working dogs.

John D. – The Life-Saving Medical Detection Dog

John D., a Border Collie from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), is a pioneer in medical scent detection. Trained to detect ovarian and thyroid cancers, John D.’s exceptional sense of smell has helped researchers identify diseases earlier, saving countless human lives. His intelligence, focus, and determination highlight why Border Collies are ideal for medical detection work.
Zammy – The Conservation Detection Expert
Zammy, a Border Collie from Germany, works in wildlife conservation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). Trained to detect Eurasian otter droppings and newts, Zammy helps scientists gather non-invasive data for habitat protection and species conservation. Her intelligence, speed, and incredible sense of smell make her invaluable for conservation detection programs worldwide.

Why Border Collies Excel in Life-Saving Roles
Border Collies combine intelligence, agility, stamina, and focus, making them ideal for medical detection, mountain rescue, and conservation work. Their keen noses, rapid learning, and work ethic allow them to save lives, protect wildlife, and assist humans in ways no other breed can match.
