Our Story

It is a privilege to have you visit us for a truly indigenous experience – our wonderful border collies are all born and trained here by the maestro dog whisperer John Davoren. Our tours of the ringfort and farm open a window to the extraordinary lives, past and present, here at Caherconnell Fort.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the Caherconnell adventure with you.

Our Heritage

Caherconnell is a family owned farm on the heart of the Burren on Irelands Wild Atlantic Way. The hospitality business began 3 generations ago with Mary Ann Davoren who began to offer scones and tea to the Ringfort visitors. Hence started the tradition of warm and welcoming hospitality which lasts to this day. Her husband Martin was the farmer at Caherconnell in those days, keeping sheep and cattle as well as some dairy cows. He had a great interest in livestock and as upland farmers we carry on the traditions and skills he shared with his family every day.

The farm was taken over by Martins son, John. An enterprising man John expanded the dairy offering by working with his neighbours at Aillwee to create the renowned Burren Gold cheese – this began the collaborative tradition carried on by the family at Caherconnell today.

Our Working Farm

Today Caherconnell remains a working farm – Paul, John’s son produces milk from the dairy herd, while John continues to breed and raise beef cattle and keep some sheep. In this way we continue in the footsteps of previous generations. We believe strongly in the importance of quality food production and in the spirit of local collaboration . The fruits of the farm can be tasted in the cheese in the cafe produced in conjunction with our Burren neighbours at Aillwee Cave and seen in the visitor centre which now stands where the family milked cows many years ago. We are delighted that the Burren Gold cheese has won numerous awards and has gained international recognition.

The farming skills which have been carefully passed through generations of the family are on display at the sheepdog demonstrations, highlighting the crucial importance of training and keeping dogs to help with the work of farming the extraordinary Burren landscape we call home.

The Network

The Network aims to be a recognisable network of enterprises in the Burren, who have achieved independent accreditation, demonstrate ecotourism ‘best practice’, positively discriminate in each other’s favour, provide ‘one voice’ representation on issues impacting the Burren (where appropriate), and inspire conservation activism.

The Burren Ecotourism Network and the Burren Geopark have enjoyed a special relationship since 2008, when the Burren Connect Project first instigated the establishment of the Network. The two organisations now work in partnership, having agreed in late 2012 to pool their resources in pursuit of their common objective. Both organisations are committed to the promotion of responsible tourism that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. They work together to promote ‘The Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark’ as a leading sustainable visitor destination, celebrated for high standards in visitor experience, conservation and learning.

Sustainable Travel

Part of sustainable code of practice involves encouraging the use of sustainable transport. Timetables for buses are available to our visitors.

Maps of all the looped walks and trails in the Burren area are available to guests.
