About

Caherconnell Fort

The fort was inhabited up to the late 16th century and is excavated annually yielding many treasures which deepens our understanding of the fort. On site finds include jewellery, glass from Venice and amber from the Baltic. The finds indicate that this was a high class settlement and other items uncovered such as pieces of board games and musical instruments as well as the earliest pen found in the British isles indicate that the settlement was cultured as well as literate. The fort experience also includes an insightful audio-visual presentation on the Burren and an animation imagining a day in the life of the fort family.

The story of the fort is brought to life by excellent tours led by local enthusiastic guides, tours are available at these times.

“What a wonderful experience!! We absolutely loved watching the beautiful dogs do their amazing work, and I was so happy that we got to give them lots of pets at the end!!

We also had a fantastic guided tour of the fort … We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who loves animals and history. It was truly great!”

“We really enjoyed the sheepdog demo and were really impressed. There was also a nice place to have lunch and the people working there were all friendly. As a bonus it was only about 25 minutes from Cliffs of Moher”

“The sheepdogs are the star of this establishment! The demonstration was enjoyable, but being able to pet and interact with these sweet animals was truly a highlight for me.

There is a small cafe that was very good and had a nice selection of sandwiches, soups, coffee, and treats. The visit to Fort was informative. Our guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this experience for anyone traveling to Ireland!

We stopped at the cafe and got sandwiches for lunch and they were so good! The staff was lovely, couldn’t ask for a better visit. “

“The sheepdog demo was one of the highlights of our trip.  It was amazing to see Lynn, Rose, Lee, and Jess work.  They are so incredibly smart.  We loved getting to spend time with them after the demo and getting to hold a baby lamb was special.  Don’t miss this experience!

If you arrive early, you can grab coffee and a bite to eat in the cafe. The staff is so friendly and the lemon meringue pie was delish!”

This experience was really cool! The border collies are so well-trained and it’s amazing to see them in action. We got a lot of information on how the dogs are trained and then see it all in practice. There’s a gift shop, bathrooms, and a little Cafe here as well
