The staff at Caherconnell Archaeology Field School have vast experience in both the academic and consultancy sectors. With an excellent staff-student ratio of 1:5 our courses give students the opportunity to study in the unique Burren region of Ireland and guarantee the highest educational standards.

Dr. Michelle Comber, Archaeological, Excavation and Academic Director

Dr. Michelle Comber is a graduate of the Department of Archaeology, National University of Ireland, Galway.

She completed her primary degree in 1994, Masters degree in 1996 and PhD in 2000.

She was a National University of Ireland Fellow, 1996 – 1998, and Government of Ireland Scholar, IRCHSS Scholarships in the Humanities and Social Sciences 1998 – 2000.

She held a one-year post-doctoral research post at the Centre for the Study of Human Settlement and Historical Change at NUI, Galway 2001–02 (now the Moore Institute), and has over 20 years excavation experience.

Dr. Noel McCarthy, Excavation Supervisor and Academic Assistant

Dr Noel McCarthy

Dr. Noel McCarthy is a graduate of the Department of Archaeology, National University of Ireland, Galway.

He completed his primary degree in 2004 and PhD, investigating the prehistoric archaeology of Slieve Gamph (The Ox Mountains) and its hinterland, in 2010.

His research interests range broadly across physical and interpretational aspects of archaeology, particularly the investigation and understanding of the multitude of elements that form prehistoric landscapes.

He has been an occasional lecturer on a variety of courses in the Department of Archaeology at NUI, Galway since 2004 and has worked on numerous excavations in research and commercial archaeology, including the 2010 series of excavations at Caherconnell.
